Lifeguarding

Being a lifeguard is a rewarding way to contribute to your community. Our volunteer lifeguards patrol Ruakākā Beach each weekend from Labour weekend through to Easter every year.

Becoming a volunteer Surf Lifeguard at Ruakākā Surf Club offers an incredible opportunity to serve our community, enjoy our beautiful beaches, and develop valuable skills. As a lifeguard, you'll receive training in first aid, resuscitation, and practical rescue techniques, all while staying fit and making lifelong friends.

Eligibility Requirements:

Age: 14 years or older.

Swimming Ability: Capable of swimming 400 meters freestyle in under 9 minutes.

Training Program:

Upon joining, you'll participate in a comprehensive training program that includes sessions at local pools, beaches, and clubrooms. The program covers essential skills to help you achieve your Surf Lifeguard Award, the entry-level qualification for patrolling members.

Patrol Duties:

After obtaining your Surf Lifeguard Award, you'll join a patrol team and be rostered for duty. Volunteer lifeguards patrol on weekends and public holidays during the warmer months, ensuring the safety of beachgoers.

Further Opportunities:

Beyond the initial qualification, there are numerous opportunities for further development, including advanced surf lifeguarding, search and rescue, first aid, and operation of rescue watercraft like jet skis. These pathways can also serve as a foundation for careers in emergency services.

Volunteering as a Surf Lifeguard is both fun and rewarding—you'll make a real difference in people's lives and have a great time along the way. Join us at Ruakākā Surf Club and become part of a dedicated team committed to keeping our beaches safe.
